The Dordogne is a French department in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region which is full of must-see places not to be missed. It is a perfect destination for your eco-responsible holidays with family or lovers (you can also discover my post Visit Collonges la Rouge).

Visit the village of Beynac-et-Cazenac

Beynac-et-Cazenac with its imposing Castle which dominates the Dordogne is classified among the Most Beautiful Villages of France.

At the time of the Hundred Years’ War, the fortress of Beynac was one of the French strongholds. The Dordogne served as the border between France and England; nearby, Castelnaud Castle was in English hands. (www. Dordogne-perigord-noir.fr)

In addition to its castle, you can visit the 12th century Saint-Jean-Baptiste church, which has remarkable Romanesque architecture.

Also go and discover the hanging gardens of Marqueyssac. Located near Beynac-et-Cazenac, these gardens offer a spectacular view of the Dordogne valley. Visitors can also discover hundreds of varieties of plants and trees here.

 

Visit the village of Castelnaud la Chapelle

Castelnaud la Chapelle, ranked among “The Most Beautiful Villages of France”, is a village with exceptional charm.

Here are some of the activities you can do there:

  • Visit the castle of Castelnaud: it is located on a hill and offers a breathtaking view of the Dordogne valley. It was built in the 12th century and has been restored many times over the years.
  • Explore the village: Castelnaud-la-Chapelle is a charming little village with many cobbled streets and stone houses.
  • Discover the Museum of War in the Middle Ages: this museum is located in the castle of Castelnaud and offers exhibitions on war in the Middle Ages. There are armours, weapons and art objects that illustrate this period of history.
  • Watch the making of a wooden top: at the entrance to the town of Castelnaud, you will find the wood turner who will make beautiful wooden tops before your eyes. If you wish, you can buy a spinning top for 5 Euros.

Visit Brantôme: the Venice of the Perigord

Check out Brantôme: the Venice of Périgord, due to its picturesque location on the banks of the Dronne River.

Here are some of the activities you can do there:

  • Visit the Abbaye de Brantôme: a former Benedictine monastery founded in the 8th century. Visitors can explore the buildings and gardens, including a magnificent Romanesque tower.
  • Take a boat trip on the Dronne: you can admire the magnificent landscapes from the water and enjoy a unique perspective on the village.
  • Explore the historic center of Brantôme: a real gem, with its cobbled streets, stone buildings and ancient bridges. You can also discover many local shops and restaurants.

La Roque-Gageac, classified among the Most Beautiful Villages of France, at the foot of a cliff facing the Dordogne.

The walk to the top of the village will offer you sublime views.  

Do not miss the exotic garden.

The more athletic can rent a Canöe and go down the Dordogne. Blow of heart assured.

Terrasson is a charming medieval town. Its old town is a picturesque area with narrow streets and buildings made of stone, dating back to the 12th century.

When visiting the old town of Terrasson, some places of interest you might want to check out include:

  1. The Gardens of the Imagination (Les Jardins de l’Imaginaire): These beautiful gardens are located on a hill overlooking the town and offer stunning views of the Dordogne Valley. They are designed to stimulate the senses and inspire creativity.

  2. The Old Bridge (Pont Vieux): This historic bridge dates back to the 13th century and spans the Vézère River. It offers lovely views of the river and the surrounding countryside.

  • A few Kilometers from Sarlat you can discover The Grotte de Lascaux, famous for its prehistoric cave paintings, which are some of the finest examples of Paleolithic art in the world. In order to preserve the fragile paintings, the original cave has been closed to the public since 1963. However, there is a replica cave, which is open to visitors.
